HAPPY HOWLING

IMG_1976
The tradition of carving lanterns goes back to Ireland and a guy known as Stingy Jack. Stingy earned his reputation the hard way, skulking about garden plots after dark thieving cabbages and spuds and whatever else he could cram into his knickers. He creeped people out. So mick gardeners started lighting up turnips to scare him away, an early organic method that worked about as well as organic pest deterrent methods of today, not really. But we do what we can. Anyway, that's the story. Believe it or not when folks light pumpkins in this modern age they aren't summoning the great satan himself, but instead giving a tip of the Irish cap to an age old tradition. Above is a picture of Letwan and my crop of lanterns. Can you find the jack-o-lope-o-lantern?

Ironically we go to the trouble to attract tricks-or-treaters, not scare them away. Over the past few years we've averaged just under a tricks-or-treater per lantern. Which means that tonight we'll be handing out about 12 and a half snicker bars.

Below you can listen to a collection of Halloween inspired podcasts. Might want to skip ahead to the Hub City Slasher story featuring Mary Groth and Letwan from Pest Control. Probably the best Halloween Story I've ever heard.
