THE DECEMBERISTS – "LONG LIVE THE KING"

Decemberists

"From the outset, we were keen to stay connected to the people that were coming to our shows, and we really have attempted to do everything on our own terms. Those are qualities that are associated with the indie world." – Colin Meloy, The Decemberists

It's been a busy year for folk-rock artists The Decemberists. Coming off the heels of their most ambitious rock record, The Hazards of Love, they returned with the stripped-down-by-comparison folk record, The King is Dead, back in January. After a summer spent supporting the record on the road, a record that debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, The Decemberists leave their fans with a bit of a treat EP before they take a somewhat extended break from the group.

Long Live the King is comprised of six tracks that mostly resemble the country/folk tunes of The King is Deadmost likely, because they were left on the cutting room floor. This doesn't mean they weren't worthy of the record, but perhaps they didn't fit the narrative that lead singer/songwriter, Colin Meloy, sets to achieve with each album. While a few tracks seems to gracefully transition from this year's full-length, the track "Bury Davy" feels a bit more like The Hazards of Love and they even throw out a Grateful Dead cover with "Row Jimmy."

Long Live the King is out today via Capitol. Listen to their cover of "Row Jimmy", below.
