THE BLACK KEYS – "EL CAMINO"

Black Keys

"A lot of times you'll play in a big city and people will just stand around. That always seems to be the thing. You'll go to L.A. or New York City and people will just stand there. You have to go to, like, middle America to find people who want to go crazy." – Dan Auerbach, The Black Keys

It's been a busy week around the shop, so you'll have to forgive my Tuesday neglect of In-Season. But, better late than never, I suppose. Especially when it comes to this week's selection, El Camino by The Black Keys.

El Camino is the seventh studio recording for the bluesy-rock duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney. It comes on the heels of 2010's Brothers, which propelled them from indie-rock heroes to main stream rock icons – earning the boys three Grammy awards.

The success is still strange, says drummer Carney. "It's a weird thing to happen 10 years into your career. It's been so gradual that you don't notice it. One day you look out and the audience consists of 65,000 people. It's like looking in the mirror and one day you realise you've gone grey."

With El Camino, The Black Keys didn't alter their equation too much. “I think it’s different, but a little bit of the same,” explains Carney. “I mean, it sounds like us.” You can expect a more up-tempo record than Brothers, but their signature sound, built on a combination of their love of hip-hop and ol' fashioned rock-and-roll, still holds strong.

Check out their video for "Lonely Boy" below and try your best not to go crazy like Dan's fellow middle Americans. El Camino is out now via Nonesuch.
